The Kotatsu of Boro – The Lion Dance Cloth

The Kotatsu of Boro – The Lion Dance Cloth / Sugihara Nobuyuki x Ayaka Nakamura

Old Kimono, flag, band, thread, wood, horsehair, glue, bell / H2.7m x W3.7m x D4m / Takamatsu Artist in Residence 2020 / Konyamachi KOTO MATH Annex / Kagawa / 2021

We received old kimonos, rags, belts, and Kabuki flags from the citizens of Takamatsu, and sew these pieces together with visitors in a vacant store in the Hyogomachi shopping mall in Takamatsu City in winter; we sew them into a large kotatsu heating table cloth with the tattered technique (Boro), and get warmth in the kotatsu, while eating the roasted oranges: In Kagawa Prefecture, people pray for good health by eating roasted oranges. By sewing the kotatsu cloth, we created a communication space to talk about land and history together. And we researched about lion dance and folklore. In the process, we got the wood at the Chikiri Shrine and carved into a lion dance head. And on the loom, there is a component also called Chikiri, which is a wooden rod with a central contraction. The warp threads are wound on the Chikiri to weave. And at the end of our stay, we performed a kotatsu closing ritual in which the kotatsu cloth was transformed into a lion dance cloth and moved. These regulars were gathered and sitting around the kotatsu table, drinking tea, chatting while hand-sewing and stitched fabrics. Among them were elementary school students, middle school students, young women and wives, as well as drunken male elders. Combining the sewing stitches of various people, we made a beautiful lion dance cloth until just before the ritual. We invited local people to play with a gong and a drum, and danced a kotatsu lion dance, praying for good health and the plague subsided.
